I took it that way of course. I take every comment as a compliment no matter how it’s intended; it’s just my nature. It’s just unusual among heavy construction workers to compliment each other by pointing out the similarities between a work partner weighed down with tools and grime and a little girl, factionalized or otherwise.

I think they were saying that you were reliable and intelligent and that they could trust you to work safely. And maybe the only way some men can offer that compliment is to tease you…

Lovely story. I wonder why it is that some friendships remain, others not. Circumstances, sense of loyalty, commitment, common interests, same sense of humor, partners, distance (or the lack of it), and many other reasons, I guess. When it works, it is a cherished gift!

Many years ago a fellow Dockbuilder on a heavy construction job told me that everyone can be seen as a character on The Simpsons and that I am Lisa. He meant it as a compliment.
